Dallas Cowboys Urged To Trade For Former First-Round Pick

The Dallas Cowboys have CeeDee Lamb and then not a whole lot else at the wide receiver position.

Yes, Lamb is one of the best pass-catchers in football, but he needs some support. The Cowboys tried to provide that for him with veteran wide out Brandin Cooks last season, but Cooks was a disappointment.

Dallas also had Michael Gallup, who appeared to be on a very positive trajectory earlier in his career, but he was derailed by injuries, leading up to his release from the Cowboys this offseason.

Due to financial constraints, Dallas was not able to add any receivers in free agency, and it also did not draft a wide out until the sixth round late last month.

Is Cooks really enough adequate support behind Lamb heading into 2024?

Even if Cooks has a bounceback year, the Cowboys still need another option in their receiving corps, and Matt Lombardo of Heavy Sports thinks that Tennessee Titans receiver Treylon Burks could be a fit.

An AFC scouting director recently spoke to Heavy.com, and he thinks Burks still has some upside.

“Treylon’s obviously a big slot target,” the executive said. “You’d have to have a simple route tree for him, though. He’s big, physical, still on a rookie deal and that makes him more than worth taking a flier on.”

The Titans just signed Tyler Boyd earlier this week, giving them a formidable receiver trio of Calvin Ridley, DeAndre Hopkins and Boyd. It also means that Burks could be on his way out.

“He’s a bust as a first-round pick,” added the exec. “But he can be a situational piece in the right scheme. He has good hands, strong but is at his best working inside or in bubble screen situations where you can use his power to run after the catch.”

Burks, who played his collegiate football at the University of Arkansas, was selected by Tennessee with the 18th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Injuries and underwhelming performance in general have been the story for Burks since he entered the league.

The 24-year-old played in 11 games during his rookie campaign, catching 33 passes for 444 yards and a touchdown. He was even less productive in 2023, as he logged just 16 catches for 221 yards in another 11 contests.

At 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, Burks has great size for a receiver, although he is not exactly fleet afoot. He can, however, potentially develop into a decent possession receiver in the right system.

Perhaps the Cowboys can offer that to him.
